Aff or Neg?

January 10th, 2010 Scott Phillips 19 comments

This card sparked an argument on the Emory team back in the day and I saw a recent discussion of the same issue, so I pose the question:

If the neg reads a security K vs an aff about hegemony, is this an aff answer card or a neg response to realism?

Debate Telephone

I was reading this book on comedy writing and it had some chapter about how the reason most people aren’t funny is that they don’t really come up with their own jokes, they basically just re-hash jokes people wrote a long time ago that they have seen before. Since the majority of humor is based on surprise, these recycled jokes lose some of their impact with each retelling. On top of that, the more times a joke gets told by different people the more of its original meaning gets lost and the less funny it becomes.

Our tournament consistently brings together some of the best 1st and second year debaters from across the country.  Woodward is conveniently located 1 mile away from the Atlanta airport and we shuttle our participants to and from the tournament hotel so its a relatively cheap tournament to attend.

Famous Debate Cards Quiz at sporcle

January 4th, 2010 Bill Batterman Comments off

Are you a debate geek? Want to test your level of geekery? Check out the new Famous Debate Cards quiz at sporcle and see how you stack up.

Here’s how it works: you are presented with brief quotations—one or two lines—from twenty of the most famous pieces of evidence (cards) in debate. Once you click the start button, you have six minutes to correctly identify the author’s last name and year of publication for each of the cards.

You do not need to provide your answers in order—feel free to skip around. If you type a correct answer, it will be displayed next to the appropriate quotation. If you type an incorrect answer, nothing happens… delete and keep guessing. Answers must be entered as last names and four digit years only (e.g. Levkovitz 2009—not Levkovitz ‘9 or Roy Levkovitz 12-10-2009).

If this proves popular, I’ll continue creating debate sporcle quizzes and sharing them here on The 3NR.
